The art world’s buzzing after the revelation that Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘Salvator Mundi’ which recently sold at Christie’s for a record of nearly $500 million will be on display at the new Louvre Abu Dhabi.
There has been much speculation
about the mystery buyer of the da Vinci.
But now the painting, which has been
mired in controversy over its authenticity, will become the big draw at the
Louvre Abu Dhabi – supposedly its answer to the Louvre Paris’ seminal work, the
Mona Lisa.
Insiders at Art Basel Miami speculated
the buyer’s wealthy Abu Dhabi prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the
Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi who’s been funding Louvre Abu Dhabi and ruler of the
United Arab Emirates intent on promoting the cultural legacy of the area.
But the New York
Times reported Wednesday that documentation reflects the buyer’s a
different prince, Saudi royal Bader bin Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Farhan
al-Saud.
