Chilaka Patrick Late Ras Kimono Mike Okri and Charles Obuh |
One of my favorite musician was the dreadlocked Ras Kimono who recently passed on.
Reggae music back then in the late eighties and early nineties was the in thing for me at that time and tracks from Kimono's album got me nodding to beats that has remained evergreen in my mind.
Later on my joy knew no bounds when I spotted Ras Kimono within my neighborhood and word went out that he was wooing a female military personnel who he later won over and got married to till the cold hands of death took him.
Looking back,I still remember his first visit to my family home in Navy Town Lagos and to my greatest surprise my mother of blessed memory introduced Kimono as her maternal cousin from Onicha Olona in Delta state.
I was stunned and again happy to be related to a musician whose beats I have grown to love and from that day I never stopped telling anyone who cares to listen of my connection to Ras Kimono.
Fast forward to present day, after losing contact with him for over fifteen years, I was opportuned to run into my dreadlock cousin of mine.
The venue was at the official launch of Association of Music Band Owners AMBON in Victoria Island Lagos on the 22nd of April 2018 courtesy of my Paddi man Chilaka Patrick.
Seeing him I was happy to reconnect with him and as I made my stride towards him,his gaze caught me and from his countenance I guessed he had no memory of who I am.
I greeted and shook hands with him and formally introduced myself to him and in a swift movement,he gave me a bear hug and was happy to know a close kin of his, was around him.
We exchanged numbers and he told me to get in touch for us to catch up.
Sadly I never did till I heard the bad news of his death in a Lagos hospital.
Oh death why are you so cruel, why Ras Kimono, must he leave this world at this time and age but again who am I to ask God these questions.
Adieu great Rastafarian till we meet to part no more.
