Nigerian man, Chimene Onyeri, found guilty of trying to assassinate US judge

A Nigerian man who attempted to kill a US Travis County Judge in Houston has been found guilty on all 17 counts preferred against him.
In 2015, Chimene Onyeri had attempted to kill Judge Julie Kocurek outside her home in Houston because she was about to sentence him to prison on a probation violation.
30-year-old Onyeri admitted to shooting Kocurek’s car.
He claims he didn’t know the judge was in the car and that the shots he fired were just meant to destroy property and scared the family.
A federal jury in Texas on Thursday found Onyeri guilty of multiple counts of fraud, racketeering and other charges.
Prosecutors say Onyeri as part of a racketeering enterprise shot state District Kocurek as she was in an SUV returning to her home.
Kocurek underwent more than 20 surgeries and lost a finger after the attack.
Sentencing is scheduled for August and Onyeri faces up to life in prison.
According to reports, US law enforcement officials tried to get Onyeri deported in 2012 but failed. Both Travis County and the Rollingwood Police Department worked together to file an official request for the Immigration and Naturalization Service to review Onyeri’s criminal record for deportation consideration, but what came of that request is unclear.
